Your best hires might already be on your team. You just need the right strategy to unlock their potential.
Employee mobility is the strategic movement of employees into new roles or projects within the same organization that align with their skills, experience, and career aspirations. It focuses on leveraging existing talent to meet business needs while creating opportunities for growth, which in turn drives engagement, improves customer success team retention, and fills critical positions with people who already understand your culture, processes, and customers.
The impact of employee mobility.
Employee mobility helps customer success teams maximize their internal talent pool, uncover hidden potential, accelerate career growth to keep employees engaged, and fill roles faster while reducing hiring costs and lost productivity.
Enhanced employee retention: Providing clear career pathways helps employees stay engaged and invested in the company.
Stronger organizational culture: Internal mobility fosters a culture of growth, trust, and development.
More engaged workforce: Employees who see advancement opportunities internally are more motivated and productive.
In numbers: why employee mobility matters.
- Employees who transition internally are 3.5 times more likely to stay engaged. (LinkedIn)
- Career development is the number one reason employees leave when they do not see opportunities internally. (LinkedIn)
- Employee retention increases by 41 percent in companies with strong internal mobility programs. (Nestor)
- Internal hires ramp up 30 to 50 percent faster, reducing onboarding costs and productivity gaps.
How to build your employee mobility program.
The first step is to build your internal talent pool. Begin by deciding how you will capture and track this information. You might use your ATS, your HRIS, or even start with a simple Excel spreadsheet.
Once you have your system, identify who belongs in the pool. High-potential performers should absolutely be included. They are already engaged and typically supported through succession planning, promotions, and leadership opportunities.
However, the real opportunity is in re-engaging the part of your workforce that is most likely not engaged, which often includes your steady performers and core team members. These are solid employees who consistently do their job well, may not aspire to be the next people leader, and bring tremendous value to the organization. They are often long-tenured team members who hold deep institutional knowledge, can train others effectively, and remain loyal when treated well.
Just because they are not seeking a leadership title does not mean they are not critical to your success.
Invite employees to volunteer for the program. Partner with HR business partners and talent teams to help identify them. Look for individuals in each business unit who regularly raise their hands for additional responsibilities or growth opportunities.
Once identified, hold objective and unbiased conversations with them about their interests, career goals, and skill sets.
From there, implement a program that provides exposure to new opportunities within the company. This could include projects, cross-functional collaborations, mentorship programs, or stretch assignments that keep them engaged and growing without forcing them into roles they do not want.
