What’s the Current Job Market for Customer Success Professionals Like?

Share

The good news is that Customer Success is where it’s at! As more companies invest in Customer Success, the demand for good Customer Success Managers (CSMs) also continues to grow.

LinkedIn listed Customer Success Manager as the third most promising job for 2018. Here’s the stats to prove it.

  • Median Total Salary: $82,300
  • Job Openings (YoY Growth): 1,000+ (91%)
  • Career Advancement Score (out of 10): 10

Now let’s take a look at some of the trends driving this growth in the Customer Success industry.

1. Booming Tech Market

It’s no surprise that there’s been an increase in tech jobs over the past five years especially with developments in big data and machine learning. But the rise of Customer Success Managers is directly attributed to the continued growth of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offerings. These software companies are built on a recurring business model which is where Customer Success becomes a key component to driving revenue growth.

2. You Don’t Have to be a Total Techie

As we said the tech market is thriving, but don’t be discouraged if you aren’t already a techie. To start in a job in Customer Success you don’t necessarily need to have a technology background. To be a successful CSM it’s typically seen to be more important for you to have strong customer service experience as well as solid selling skills. Learning the product and industry are going to be important but those things can be taught. This low barrier to entry is a key driver in the interest of the role.

3. The Age of the Customer

Today companies can no longer just take their customers for granted. Customers are now in charge and strive to do business with companies that they respect and believe that they have their best interests in mind. Before the rise of CSMs there was a real disconnect with nurturing the customer along their journey which would result in customer churn. But with this new customer-centric approach, Customer Success teams have stepped up to the plate to own this relationship.
